Powering Equitable Building Decarbonization with Heat Pumps
California just celebrated its first ever Heat Pump Week, and LACI joined in on the festivities by hosting Powering Heat Pump Progress for SoCal at the La Kretz Innovation Campus. In welcoming SoCal communities and cleantech stakeholders to our campus on April 15th, we hopefully succeeded in taking the stress of Tax Day off the minds of attendees by educating them on programs to save money on the latest and greatest heat pump appliances that can lower energy bills, cut harmful emissions, and increase home comfort and efficiency.
We heard from key stakeholders including Los Angeles Deputy Mayor Nancy Sutley, leaders from LADWP and Los Angeles County, heat pump manufacturers, and a diverse panel consisting of program implementers, community partners, and cleantech startups.
Wondering what incentive programs and opportunities were showcased during the event? Read on to learn more about how you can take advantage of opportunities to adopt heat pumps to help decarbonize your household and community.
SoCal residents may qualify for a free heat pump
The SoCal Equitable Decarbonization Program, administered by Los Angeles County for the entire Southern California Region, is a new program designed to expand access to heat pumps and other efficient electric technologies by offering no-cost upgrades to qualifying Southern Californians. The program will help eligible residential customers electrify their homes to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while encouraging resiliency to extreme heat, indoor air quality improvements, energy affordability, grid reliability, and local workforce opportunities.
The program aims to upgrade approximately 10,500 total units by 2029 for low-income households in single-family, multifamily, and manufactured housing units, helping make progress toward LACI’s Clean Energy 2028 Roadmap targets to deploy residential heat pump HVAC systems and water heaters. The program, with the support of a broad coalition of community organizations, is designed to be a one-stop shop providing comprehensive project support services for residents to decarbonize their homes at no cost.
Eligible upgrades include heat pumps for heating and cooling, heat pump water heaters, insulation, induction ranges or cooktops, LED lights, electrical wiring and panel upgrades, and more. Find out if you can take advantage of the first phase of the Equitable Building Decarbonization Program here!
