In addition to hosting Resident Artists and fostering collaborative opportunities with the cleantech community, AIR will host public programming including Artists Talks and Professional Development Workshops. Join the mailing list
to stay up to date on AIR public programming.
AIR has partnered with Small Green Door in Commerce to build a collective network of skills and knowledge supporting environmental-based art projects.
AIR will also feature a series of free Artist Talks and Professional Development Workshops to help local artists create sustainable opportunities for their work.
Each Resident Artist will create a limited edition work, with half of the edition remaining with the artist and half of the edition going to LACI. Artists will also participate in a culminating Work-in-Progress exhibition and group panel discussion (both free and open to the public) to discuss their experience of inter-disciplinary collaboration and learning.
The residency program is open to Los Angeles based artists. Through their submitted portfolio, eligible artists will display an ongoing commitment to a creative practice that will benefit from the technical and intellectual capital LACI has to offer. Resident Artists’ work will have the capacity to raise awareness of issues related to agriculture, environment (built or natural), energy, transportation, waste, water and related themes.
Students and recent graduates are not eligible for AIR. Artists must have completed education a minimum of 5 years prior to applying, or display equivalent professional experience through submitted portfolio and/or CV. Higher education and/or gallery representation are not required. Commitment to an ongoing creative practice will be evident in an artist’s portfolio and experience.
Preference will be given to artists resident in Los Angeles County or surrounding areas for a minimum of three years. Artists must continue to maintain their Los Angeles based workspace throughout the residency period. (This workspace may be located within a home.)
Previous machine shop experience is not necessary. Full training will be provided.
Artists of all backgrounds and disciplines are invited to apply. LACI is committed to a policy of nondiscrimination and equal opportunity for all persons regardless of race, sex, color, religion, creed, national origin or ancestry, age, marital status, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, and disability.
Joining the initial resident artist, Debra Scacco, will be two artists selected by a jury of interdisciplinary professionals, including Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate, Thom Mayne; Director of The Underground Museum and Independent Curator, Megan Steinman; Artist Sherin Guirguis; LACI President and CEO, Matt Petersen; and MOCA Director of Education and Public Programs, Amanda Hunt.
Our interdisciplinary selection committee will review applications and recommend up to eight shortlisted candidates for interview. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to LACI to discuss proposals with key stakeholders.
Additional selectors are being confirmed.

AIR is made possible in part through a generous $75,000 grant from the Durfee Foundation, a family foundation investing in extraordinary people and programs making a better Los Angeles. This, with additional significant support from LACI SVP Ben Stapleton, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, Historical Cultural Neighborhood Council, Environmental Defense Fund and numerous others have enabled the launch of AIR.
We are immensely grateful for our supporters, who are making our vision a reality. The Durfee Foundation have provided us with an invaluable launch platform, enabling our ongoing fundraising efforts to focus on support for year two. If you would like to be a part of securing our future by including AIR in your giving program, you can do so here.
